How to Pay for Couples Therapy

More and more couples are recognizing the benefits of couples therapy. While it used to be a forbidden subject, many people are open to discussing the emotional issues they face so they can receive the help they need. One question that often comes up when discussing couples therapy is, “Who pays the therapist? Me or my insurance company?” It all depends on the type of coverage you have. Check it out!

When Insurance Pays

You should contact your insurer to find out exactly what type of coverage you have for family therapy benefits. Every insurance company does it differently. One insurer might not offer coverage at all. Another might offer coverage for only a handful of sessions. Another might offer coverage for as many sessions as you need, but attach a copay for each session. Be sure you understand your coverage so you’re not surprised when you have attended more sessions than your insurance provider allows for. Also, be sure the therapist has the right insurance information so he or she can bill them.

Your Options to Pay Out-of-Pocket

If you don’t have any insurance coverage for family therapy, you may be required to pay out-of-pocket. Don’t give up hope yet if you are financially unable to foot the bill on your own. You may have some other options.

  1. Speak With Your Religious Leader – Many religions are family-based and will help to pay for therapy because they want the members of their congregation to succeed in their marriages. Similar to insurance coverage, they may require partial payment or allow only a certain amount of sessions.
  2. Set Up a Payment Plan – Your therapist might work with you on a payment plan so you don’t have to pay everything upfront.
  3. Ask About a Discount – Some professionals will give their patients a discount if they pay in full and in cash at every appointment. Some might also give a discount if you pay one week ahead of your session. Others might give you a fourth session free if your first three were paid in full and on time. It never hurts to ask!
  4. Get a Part-Time Job – How important is it to you that couples therapy is successful? Is it important enough that you could get a part-time job to help pay for it? You would only have to work until you are finished with therapy, and that might give you the extra cash you need to improve your relationship.

Make That First Phone Call

Making the first phone call can be intimidating if you’re unsure what to expect. Whether you have insurance coverage for couples therapy or not, contact a therapist, like a couples therapist in Palatine, IL, to learn what options you have.
