Sometimes, regardless of how much you try to prevent neck pain, it happens. The good news is there is always a chiropractor you can go to for pain relief. If you’d like to avoid neck pain as much as possible, the following are some things you can do.
Adjust the Way You Sleep
It may take some trial and error, but adjusting the way you sleep could be the ticket to a better-feeling neck. The goal is to try and keep your natural neck curve supported and maintained. To achieve this:
- Try laying on your back with a flat pillow or deep depression pillow with a great neck support.
- Lay on your side with a fluffier pillow.
- Sleep in an adjustable bed or recliner with a flat pillow.
- Lay on your back and put a pillow under each of your arms.
Raise Your Computer Monitor
You want your computer monitor to sit straight across from your eyes when sitting at your desk. Having to put your chin down or up will cause your neck unnecessary strain. If you can get away with a taller desk, you may need to make a purchase. You could also set your monitor on a sturdy box or other item that will raise it up.
Text Less
Anything you do on your phone that causes your head to hang down in order to see the screen is going to strain your neck. Set a time restriction for yourself so you don’t overdo the amount of time you spend texting, scrolling through social media and other similar tasks that require a lot of time on your phone. You could also raise your device to eye level, but this could eventually strain your neck as well as you use your arm and shoulder muscles in a way you’re not used to.
Sit Up Straight
Your mother probably encouraged you to sit up straight all your life, and there’s a reason for that. Maintaining a supportive posture will do wonders for the amount of pain you might be feeling in your neck. Keep your head, shoulders and hips aligned correctly with each other to reduce the amount of weight your neck carries. Shifting your head forward juts one inch will add 10 pounds of weight to the back and neck muscles.
